Born into a musical family, Lucy was immersed in music from an early age, starting the cello at the age of six. She also began trumpet, singing and piano lessons and soon joined numerous orchestras, chamber groups, big bands and choirs. At the age of eleven she received a full scholarship to study at the prestigious Purcell School of Music, where she learnt the cello with Michal Kaznowski and Pal Banda and also received weekly tuition in trumpet, singing, piano, aural, composition, harmony, music history, music technology and music theory. Lucy decided to focus on the cello as her first instrument after joining the National Children’s Orchestra and co-leading the cello section.
In 2009 Lucy began her undergraduate studies on the cello at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, studying under Alexander Baillie and Tim Lowe. During her studies, Lucy participated in masterclasses and coaching from members of distinguished ensembles including the Alban Berg, Belcea, Dante, Endellion and Takács string quartets. For two years running her string quartet was selected to represent GSMD in the National Young String Quartet Festival in association with Wigmore Hall. The same quartet also reached the finals of the CAVATINA Intercollegiate Chamber Music Competition held at the Royal Academy of Music, performed a recital as part of the 'Illuminated Britten' festival at the Barbican Centre and performed live on BBC Radio 3 with Eric Whitacre and the BBC Singers at Milton Court. In her final year at GSMD Lucy won first prize in the highly regarded ‘Music at Beaulieu’ competition, gave the London premiere of Cecilia McDowell's 'Night Flight' for solo cello and choir and performed Elgar’s Cello Concerto with Salisbury Sinfonia.
Since graduating, Lucy has embarked upon a career as a self-employed cellist and music teacher in London. She currently performs regularly with the City String Ensemble, the Lucelli Duo and the Guildhall Session Orchestra as well as at other professional engagements. She has performed in Croatia, France, Guernsey, Italy and Uganda and in many major venues across the UK including the Barbican Hall, Cadogan Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, St John’s Smith Square and Buckingham Palace. She also has been fortunate enough to work under the direction of world-renowned musicians including Sir Simon Rattle, Eric Whitacre, John Rutter and Sir Peter Maxwell-Davies.
Lucy also has a great passion for popular music, film music and musicals. She has recorded at Abbey Road Studios for a charity single featuring Sir Cliff Richard, Russell Watson, Boy George and members of The Bee Gees, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones and Yes and has performed in musicals including Oliver!, South Pacific, 42nd Street, Carousel, Hello Dolly, Beethoven in Vienna, The Legend of Beowulf, Tinseltown, Welcome to the Show and Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens. She has also performed in musical theatre showcase concerts with the 'London Gay Men's Chorus' and the 'Henry Desmond Orchestra' and Motown, Jazz and Pop concerts with the 'Down for the Count' ensembles.
More recently Lucy has been involved in recording the soundtracks to the 'Beasts of London' exhibition at the Museum of London, the 'Christmas Carnival' at Waddesdon Manor, the production of 'Orestes' at the Barbican and the 'Illuminated River' project on the bridges of the River Thames. The latter was featured on the Channel 4 documentary 'London's Great Bridges: Lighting the Thames' in July 2019. She has worked regularly with the composer Kevin Kerrigan, including performing on his albums 'Solasta', 'Chiaroscuro' and 'The Comet Tides' and recording the solo cello part for the Taiwanese short film 'Glitches'.
